J R (Rod) Hamer

I was born at the height of the Battle of Britain in a Northern, industrial village and in due course was educated at Bury Grammar School. Thereafter, in a manoeuvre not unlike medieval sanctuary, I trained at three schools of art: those of Bury, Bolton and Manchester. At first I considered a career in Illustration, but soon I became more interested in Fine Art and thereafter did very little illustrating.

At Bury I had been inspired mainly by three tutors: Alan Childs, John Bold and (the Principal) Percy Warburton, and these having been friendly with L.S. Lowry (who appeared from to time and was now coming close to retirement) he too was influential - particularly as regards the simple, honest, putting-down of what one saw.
